FTRL is a collection of mini reviews on movies and television series that share the theme of revenge. You might disagree with my choices however i think that each recommendation deserves to be watched at least once. I hope that you enjoy and stay tuned for the next episode.
- Law Abiding Citizen
Not only is Law abiding Citizen a top 10 movie of mine it is for most people the movie their mind runs to when themes such as “revenge” or the “action” and the “thriller” genres come up.
Clyde Shelton a father and Husband witnessed the abuse and murder of his wife and daughter in his own home. After an inadequate attempt at properly sentencing the two men Clyde decides to exact revenge on every involved party including The men, the Police force and justice system. After finding out about his past career they realise that they are dealing with a weapons developer for the world of black ops who puts the entire state through a game whilst in police custody. Bombs, burials, exploding mobiles all whilst in holding.
The movies positive reputation is thanks to an all star team. With talented actors including Gerald Butler, Jamie Foxx, Viola Davis, Colm Meaney and Bruce McGill. Directed by well established director F. Gary Gary who I’d best known for Friday, Straight Outta Compton, F8 and Men in Black.
- The Boys
I kid you not The Boys may just be the best superhero show to exist to this date.
Traditional ? No
Heartfelt ? No
Amazing ? YES
Everyone loves watching superheroes save the endangered and fight the bad guys. What about superheroes that are superheroes for the public and Satan’s spawns off camera ? The boys follows a group of affected individuals who seek to find out the truth behind America’s heroes and bring about justice against Vought. Vought being the management company that are in charge of the heroes, covering up their mistake before intentional and unintentional.
Want to see someone physically run through another ? A courtroom of heads explode ? A man baby ? Someone sleeping with an octopus? The answer should be yes and you should start watching today.
(P.S stay tuned for my full review of all 3 seasons!)
- Sucker Punch
Sucker Punch is a real memory sparker movie for my sister and I. We would spend nights in a row staying up and rewatching this.
The fantasy-action movie set in the colourful corner of the mind of Babydoll. Babydoll escapes into her imagination, dreaming of a world that helped distract her from her actual situation in life.
She was wrongfully committed to a mental institution after accidentally killing her sister in her attempt to murder her abusive stepfather. Made out to be mentally unstable and danger to others her step father attempts persuade the staff into giving her a lobotomy. Aware of his attempt to cover his tracks and mute her forever she takes note of the necessary items she needs to escape.
Using her imagination Babydoll and other patients attempt to escape the asylum using the real and fictional situations. Since the following sets place in her head there are no rules and no boundaries in place. Ultimately blurring the lines between reality and imagination.
- Wrath of Man
Guy Ritchie returned in 2021 with his new baby “Wrath of Man”. A director who I would consider to be one of the fathers of the English and on occasions American Gangster theme.
Wrath of Man is the story of H (Jason Stateham) an overqualified gentlemen who gets a job at a cash moving truck company. After stopping an attempted robbery his colleagues begin to question his past. The existing members of the company have been faking robberies and stealing money. Little do they know that H is really a “gangster lord” who after months of killing drug lords and human traffickers had decided to go undercover to discover who killed his son at their last heist.
- The Dark Knight Rises:
Without a doubt in my mind the Dark Knight Rises will forever hold a spot in my top 5 movies of all time.
From one angle it’s a vigilante finding himself after losing it to his city and fellow superheroes.
From another angle it’s about a scorned adult, someone who grew up in the pits as an outcast and longs to make everyone realise he isn’t week or feeble. To show the world that he is control.
A notable performance in this movie goes to Tom Hardy, the physically and emotional strain he put on his body to prepare for the role doesn’t go unnoticed.
- The Terminal List
A show full of conspiracies and twist finds Comander Reece on a shelling of a manhunt desperate to find out who is behind the death of his loved ones.
After a Navy Seal captains platoon is ambushed and horribly slaughtered he is left as the only survivor. Captain Reece decided that something was not right despite the people around him claiming his mind is broken from Ptsd.
He conducts a manhunt, questioning those closest to him and those he’d never even consider. Leaving behind a trail of bodies , it literally seems like no one can stop him.
I personally saw inspiration from Law Abiding Citizen and other movies. I believe the line "It's a mistake to push a man to violence when violence is what he has dedicated his life to perfecting.” summarises the plot.
Although it may not be 10/10 series, Chris Pratt’s dedication to the role and the well performed fight scenes bring it all together.
- John Wick (All 3 soon to be 4)
John wick is the story of a “boogeyman” feared by most and found lurking in the shadows. An asassin is constantly being dragged back into the life of a hitman after being provoked by his aggressors.
In the first movie we see John go on a complete murder spree after his dog is killed and car is stolen. Irrational? It may seem like it but viewers realise that after the passing of his wife the dog was the last thing that she loved. After taking the one thing left that connected him to her he stops at nothing to seek revenge.
John Wick : Chapter 2 follows John yet again attempting to leave the game and after rejecting an offer his home is burned down which forces him to start again. John Wick: Chapter 3 is somewhat of a worlds most dangerous game. A hit is put out on John meaning every assassin new and scorned were free to go at him. John has to literally fight for his life.
Hopefully these mini descriptions encourage you to watch!
- Prisoners
Prisoners is believed to be one of Hugh Jackmans favourite onscreen performance amongst his viewers. The cast also included Jake Gyllenhaal, Terence Howard, Maria Bellow , Villa Davis and David Dastmalchian.
Keller (Jackman) realised that his daughter was abducted from their road. After reporting it he sensed too much hesitation in the police department’s dedication to finding her. No can stop a grieving father right ? Keller embarks on his own search desperate to find his daughter and punish those involved in her capture.
The movie plays on the lengths a parent will go to to retrieve their child and that not everyone can be trusted. Rated 81% on rotten tomatoes and an 8.1/10 on IMDb proving it’s definitely worth the watch.
