The Office, Superstore, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, New Girl and The Mindy Project walked so that Blockbuster could run. Unfortunately, it didn’t. The trailer for Blockbuster was released months ago. It sparked debates over Netflix’s morality as well as excitement for those ready to relish in the nostalgia. Many couldn’t fathom how someone at Netflix gave this the go ahead whereas others saw this cheeky move as potentially being a great sitcom with familiar faces.
The show hit the nail on the head when it came down to a ticking the nostalgia boxes. It placed the audience right back into the centre of their local blockbuster. Experiencing once more the staff suggesting films, customers making returns and watching everyone try to pick the Friday night movie. It certainly made viewers wish that we could walk back into one for the last time. However, the point of a sitcom is to be funny and memorable which is what the show lacked. This irony isn’t missed considering that the creator and writer Vanessa Ramos is a veteran in the sitcom world having written multiple seasons of B99 and Superstore. Not to mention that some of the cast are or were part of the hall of fame sitcoms mentioned already.
The talent in this show can never be questioned! The show is carried by Randall Park (Always Be My Maybe, The Mindy Project), Melissa Fumero (Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Gossip Girl), Madeleine Arthur ( To All The Boys), Tyler Sage Alvarez (Never Have I Ever), J. B. Smoove (Curb Your Enthusiasm), Olga Merediz (In the Heights) and Kamaia Fairburn (Star Falls). A perfect set up of sitcoms talent that’s unfortunately floored by a lifeless script and forced interactions.

When a killer announces that they’re owning up to their crimes you assume that it’ll be dark and fresh. More was expected regarding the dragging of Netflix by its neck. What many assumed would be a dark series ripping Netflix to shreds for driving blockbuster into the mud were met with a bouncy work place comedy. Of course a Netflix production won’t own up to its crimes and allow itself as company to be dragged by their own creation.
The series was full of potential with a lot of possible storylines existing amongst the ones they’ve presented us with. With a script containing more depth and a sprinkle of dark humour the show would have survived another season instead of being cancelled.
