It is safe to say that Dwayne Johnson’s vocal dreams of Black Adam having his own film series and multiple cameos was put to rest after the movies release. Warner Brothers didn't hold back when it came to marketing the movie. Dwayne Johnson himself was heavily involved in it, pitching ideas on global marketing and distribution. In an eighty million dollar attempt at marketing the film, they raised the overall production cost to over three hundred million. Effective ? Yes because it most certainly raised the interest and expectations for viewers. Which subsequently made the reality that the audience were met with more unfortunate.
Many fans of comics and the character were excited to see Black Adam being gifted with his own movie. Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson starred as Teth-Adam better known as antihero Black Adam. After being granted powers to liberate the ancient people of Kahndaq, Adam was imprisoned for being vengeful instead. During his imprisonment he became an idol to the people, with stories of his heroics being passed down for thousands of years. Facing death freedom fighter Isis (Sarah Shahi) frees Adam, forcing him to face the reality of a completely different world. Sticking to what he knows Adam continues with his perception of justice, punishing and bringing pain to wrongdoers. Of course this doesn't sit right with DCs Walker (Villa Davis) who demands that the Hawkman (Aldis Hodge), Doctor Fate (Pierce Brosnan), Atom Smasher (Noah Centineo) and Cyclone (Quintessa Swindell) bring Adam into custody.

For those of you who aren’t entirely familiar with the character, Adam is very similar to Shazam. Both were gifted Godlike powers however they’ve chosen to use them differently. The movie played quite close to the comics however it was let down by a bland storyline and predictable ending. The Rock was not the issue here, in fact he embodied the role of Black Adam quite well. An example of typecasting truly working in someone’s favour. The actual issue is the lack of depth, it dabbles in Adams past, dabbles in isis and her family, it even dabbles in the justice society. As you may have noticed the justice society dropped ‘of America’, which makes sense considering their presence in foreign countries. It also allows for them to be on other soil without being accused of meddling in the countries affairs. Making them a more international society means they’re able to fight the crime wherever it is. The movie also has an unhealthy relationship with Mexican stand-off music. Something that is almost laughable in a serious situation. Other than The Rocks performance the movie deserve praise for exploring radical politics too.

Overall Black Adam was a good attempt at bringing the character to life however it was floored by a week script and direction. It is likely that The Rock will cameo in other movies however, after only grossing $389 million it is high unlikely that we’ll ever get a sequel.
