THE LOST CITY REVIEW: BRINGING BACK ACTION ROM-COMS

Published on 7 September 2022 at 19:48

Never let anyone tell you that you’re too old to enjoy a rated 12 children’s romantic action comedy because The Lost City is proof. Staring Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum. As well as, Daniel Radcliffe and Da'Vine Joy Randolph.

The Lost city directed by Adam and Aaron Nee is based on a romance author Loretta (Sandra Bullock) who no longer has the motivation to do anything big after the passing of her late husband. Her novels ongoing book cover model Allan (Channing Tatum) is horrified that she has decided to quit writing her sequels. Which she decided to do as she doesn’t feel entirely appreciated anymore and she’s lost her mojo. After storming out of her book tour Angela abducted and brought to Abigail Fairfax (Daniel Radcliffe) who announces that he needs her past experience as an archaeologist to translate an ancient language and find a hidden spot on an island. In a Heroically stupid attempt at proving he’s more than just a cover model (and because he likes her) Allan sets out to save her from her abductors which starts their own journey through the mysterious land.

Why would the movie not be enjoyable when both halves of the duo are rom-coms favourites. Sandra Bullock a master of all film genres who returned to romcoms this year to retake and a remind us of her the title as one of the many queens. A woman who spent her 20s-40s giving us star quality romantic comedy material such as Ms Congeniality, and The Proposal. Not to mention her award winning performances in Drama and Thrillers (The Blind side, Birdbox, Gravity, A time to kill) . After almost 10 years out of the comedic game Bullock gave us funny, sexy and mysterious in this role.

Who better to pair Sandra up with than the man who mastered the “male bimbo” act. Channing “blonde” Tatum hit out screens as the man candy built by the Gods. With a noteworthy filmography (Dear John, 22 Jump Street, Fighting, G.I Joe, Magic Mike and The vow) Channing was no stranger to the comedic world. Since 2017 Channing had taken a few years off from being behind the camera however he found his way back into our hearts in 2021 with Free Guy. Later showing us that he’s back in his acting bag with the release of Dog and The Lost City in 2022. Channing has been whisking away his on screen lovers as well as his fans hearts since his 2006 role in Step Up. It wouldn’t be a reach and it’s safe to say that Channing profits from the world of typecasting.

The movie could be one that brings back the retired action rom-com genre. A genre that gave us hits like  This Means War, Miss Congeniality, Mr & Mrs Smith and The Bounty Hunter.

Stripping away the comedy for a moment, the movie touches on loss and closure. Exploring how impacted and stunted we can be after losing someone close to us. Using Loretta as an example it shows how far a person will go to cling onto the only things/memories that they have left.

Overall the movie was good watch and enough for a chuckle on a Saturday night with the kids or siblings.
